The Problem
In my community there is a negative stigma attached to higher education. My younger peers between the ages 15 to 18 often engage in negative activities in order to have fun or be "cool". As a person it is my mission to help those younger than me see that just because you take pride in your education you are "uncool".
Plan of Action
My plan of action was to work with the San Diego School District and continue to mentor those in the 10 to Succeed program at three of the most underprivileged High Schools in the county. Through peer to peer activities and workforce based programing I hope to create a positive change in each of my mentee's lives. But before I could work with the mentee's in the schools I had to talk to the 10 to Succeed program of each school.
After speaking to the Director of the 10 to Succeed program at the first school (Crawford High School) I was given an opportunity to mentor. I worked with about 20 kids even helping one of the students create a dress she designed and featured it our Art Conquers All Fashion Show.
Due to my success at Crawford High School I was able to work with more students at two other school in San Diego; Lincoln High School and Morse High School.
The impact I have made can not be measured, however the satisfaction I get from reading the letters of recommendation from the students is tremendous. I have impacted many teens lives and hope to continue mentoring into the summer months.
