The Problem

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected by HIV/AIDS worldwide, accounting for nearly three quarters (72%) of AIDS-related deaths in 2008. Tanzania contains an estimated 1.4 million people living with the disease, ranked the fifth highest number in the world. HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in rural Africa are often the most significantly excluded in terms of participating in global networks and obtaining technological skills that can exponentially increase the NGOs' reach and impact. With the absence of these skills, organizations do not work to their full capacity, and have a difficult time locating funding. Staff members work on a volunteer basis and cannot focus their full energies on prevention efforts. I am planning a 5-month long technology training workshop to increase the level of global inclusion of an NGO working in rural Kilimanjaro. The trainings will introduce and integrate simple and effective technologies into the functioning of Kilimanjaro Youth Volunteers in order to increase their capacity and better attract funding to carry out their mission of eliminating HIV/AIDS in the communities around Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Plan of Action

I have spent countless hours researching and writing a grant proposal, learning the most effective technologies, developing a beneficial and customized lesson plan, learning to develop simple websites, and much more. I am planning to spend a semester studying in Arusha (1 hour from Moshi) prior to implementing my project. This will allow me to learn some Swahili to help transcend the language barrier as well as familiarize myself with regional issues and challenges. The workshops will be 5-months and focus on a free and open source database (CiviCRM), web design with Wordpress, forming collaborative partnerships, writing grants and seeking out funders, Google accounts, developing a problem solving approach to technology, and much more. The trainings will eliminate the organization's challenges with technology and break down the barriers to rural Moshi's inclusion in the global discussion and participation of the elimination of HIV/AIDS.
