I go to the most diverse high school in my city and have learned about the struggles that ELL (English Language Learners) who are mostly refugee students, have in the classroom. Language barriers, limited educational backgrounds and psychological trauma all create learning disadvantages for students who come from other countries and want to learn in our American school system. Many students who cannot keep up drop out of school and end up working factory jobs for the rest of their lives. To help with this problem, I am starting a tutoring program at my high school for students who need help catching up in school for the reasons listed above. For new arrivals who speak no English at all I am recruiting bilingual students at my high school, and for students who speak English well enough but still struggle in school I am recruiting American students with good grades to tutor them. My theory is that one on one attention will make all the difference because the student will be able to ask questions and learn at his or her own pace.
