The Problem

The average age of a sex slave in the United States is fourteen. Younger have been reported - and older- as more and more accounts of American youth being forced to sell their bodies for the whims of others flood into our justice system. Programs are being implemented to rescue and help heal these victims, the government is taking notice and communities are seeing the trade that has been going on under their noses. So what's the problem? Of all of these groups, none of them include students. If the average age of a sex slave is 14, and 14 year olds aren't being warned of the danger, how can teenagers keep themselves safe and on guard against the risk they face every day? Someone needs to spread the word about the fastest growing illegal industry in the world, an industry that preys on America's unsuspecting youth.

Plan of Action

A group of us got together in October of 2007 and began planning out what PAST is, as well as what it takes to start a government-recognized non-profit organization. We decided that PAST would work mainly to raise awareness among the youth, the targets in the trade and yet the least informed. We would also raise funds to give aid to organizations for the rescue and rehabilitation of victims of forced prostitution. We got together with some adult contacts who have experience and began the process of becoming a state incorporation, as well as filing with the IRS for non-profit status. While all the behind the scenes legal work is going on, we send representatives to speak at different events and have even participated in local city wide meetings for brainstorming methods to prevent human trafficking in our area. We hope to institute a traveling awareness program that will bring our message out in a creative format to large groups of students - the youth need to know about this threat to their own friends and family!
