The Problem
The problem we're trying to solve is to make our community a better and safer place by providing a space for people our age to go to after school so they aren't on the streets. Interns teach their peers about current events within their community, issues such as racism, sexism, assimilation, and much more. We teach them this because the program believes that these a major issues that usually lead to violence and this is what is oppressing us and keeping the poor folks down instead of allowing us the rise up. We teach this to let folks know that we're all going through similar struggles but in this program, they're safe with us, we feel each others' pain even if the problems aren't exact; we have solutions to some problems and we're also a second family to many peers.
Plan of Action
The steps I took as an intern was first to apply and get hired as an intern, then during the summer we go through training where we learn about some of the issues I spoke about earlier (capitalism, imperialism, assimilation, Asian/Pacific Islander history, racism, eco-crisis and current events) and we learn skills that would allow us to captivate our peers attention so we can get our message across (leadership skills). Then when the school year begins, I recruit people to our program and as the meetings go by, a second family begins to form because we begin to grow so comfortable around each other and we bond with each other through our personal yet similar experiences. And the kind of impact I've made is that there's less racism around my community because my peers learned about the negative effects of that, there's less violence in my community because they learned that you gain nothing from that, there's more open-minded folks because they learned it's okay to be different and unique.
