The Problem

Our community of Springfield has a population of about 110,000 people. It is the State Capitol of llinois. However, our city does not have many community resources. There is a small zoo, but the lack of funding is starting to show. The zoo’s old pergola is ten years old, and is completely rotten. The current shelter isn’t being used any more, because it’s in danger of collapsing. It’s located in between the wolf and wolverine exhibits. Another problem with the old pergola is that there’s only a bench on one side of the structure, and there’s no place to sit down and look at the wolverines. People can sit and watch the wolves, but not the wolverines. I plan to make a two-sided structure so that both can be seen while sitting.

Plan of Action

For my Eagle Scout project I plan to replace a covered bench. The project will include tearing down the old 10 x 15 foot structure, leveling off the ground, building a new shelter, and building two simple wooden benches inside the pergola. The benches will be built into the structure’s corner posts, and be placed with the benches facing out along the width of the structure so that exhibits on each side can be seen while sitting. There is also an older attachment that hangs over the walkway next to the current pergola and over the zoo’s fountain in the summer. It will also have to be replaced.
