The Problem

We went to Peru for a variety of different reasons. We went to Lima for artisan rights as the Peruvian artisans are being slighted financially for their goods. We worked with a program called the Fair Trade program that connects Peruvian artisans and American consumers. We went to Huancayo, a place that was greatly influenced and hurt by the violence of the Shining Path Movement, to show the Peruvians were not alone and that we would stand by them. We went to a small mountain village of La Oroya because Doe Run, a Saint Louis based company, bought a smelter from the Peruvian government and were supposed to bring the smelter up to American health standards, but did not. The smelter was responsible for lead poisoning in the sleepy mountain town that had the entire area contaminated.

Plan of Action

We wanted to raise awareness and show our support. We had a great turn out. We ended up getting our group and the group of Peruvians we were there with on the radio to promote a march we did to promote environmental friendliness. We also managed to get the La Oroya mayor to come meet the group of Peruvians to discuss possible solutions to the problem by getting ourselves a press conference.
