The Problem

The Pet Project Midwest wants to reduce the number of animals in shelters by helping to keep them with the families they love. We help low-income families keep their pets by providing food and supplies. We help families in Des Moines, Iowa, save about $750/year, which they can use to feed their families, buy school clothes, or pay bills.

Plan of Action

We distribute pet food and supplies to families in need. The families apply for assistance (no one is turned away) and we deliver the food to area food pantries where the families can pick it up. We have only distributed twice but already have families thanking us for helping them keep their pets. And we are receiving more applications than we ever expected -- and cannot meet demand.
