The Problem

I am helping firefighters and animals. The problem is pets often die in house fires because they can't get enough oxygen and human masks don't fit them. I want to help fire departments save pets. Another problem is that many fire departments do not know about these masks or they can not afford to buy them.

Plan of Action

I started out by making collection cans and flyers and asking businesses in my county if I could put them in their stores. Originally I was trying to put the masks in the fire trucks in my county. After the great response I realized my efforts were needed in many other communities. I started taking requests for the masks from other stations and keep trying to bring in donations. I have contacted some fire related sites to get the word out and I have also been on the local news twice, radio, newspapers, local morning talk show and will be in a local magazine in April. I also started a talent show at my school and raised $200. I had some help from my dad creating a website and opening a bank account and PO box for donations. So far I have put mask kits in 30 fire stations in 5 states, have some on order and am working on 24 more. While I hope the fire fighters never have to use the masks I will be very grateful if my masks are able to save someones pet one day. The fire fighters are always very happy to receive the masks. My dad contacted the sales representative for the company that manufactures the masks and he has helped by giving me a kit to use as a demonstration and to take to media events. He is also letting me order the kits direct to get the masks to the departments quicker.

Project Updates

A lot of stations are requesting donations of these pet oxygen mask kits. I am so excited that so many departments are willing to try to rescue pets! Please help me spread the word that I need donations to help support these requests. Even a dollar will help get these kits on a truck which could save someone's pet.

You can read more about me in this morning's USA Today! Check out the article on their website http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/pets/2010-07-28-petoxygen28_ST_N.htm

Also, I am a regional scholarship winner in the Kohl's Kids Who Care program!

I have donated over 300 kits so far! Many more are still needed though so please help spread the word. I am also currently working to become a non profit!

In October I went to New York City to receive the ASPCA "Tommy P. Monahan" Kid of the Year award. It was such an honor! I even got to meet Tommy Monahan's family! I also got to tour the ASCPA adoption center. It was so nice and I played with some of the cats! I also enjoyed meeting the other award winners (especially Archie the dog of the year).

I'm still donating kits when ever I can and accepting donations. Fire fighters still need everyone's help to get these life saving masks on their trucks so they can save our pets. Maybe if kids like Tommy know that the firefighters have this equipment to save pets they won't try to rescue their pets themselves. Please help out and spread the word. If you know a station in need please tell them to contact me.

I have donated 100 pet oxygen mask kits to fire departments! And I hope to do many more. I love animals and want to do everything I can to help them. Thanks to everyone who has donated. Keep the donations coming and let your fire departments know these kits are available.

I have a new sponsor! Tony Ingram's Racing. Thank you Tony for putting www.petmask.com decals on your race cars to help me spread the word about putting pet oxygen masks in fire departments!

Good luck at the track Tony!

Tony needs sponsors to get the cars on the track... any one out there want to help out a driver that's helping out a good cause?

I am being awarded the Animals’ Choice Award from the United Animal Nations. You can check out their press release here - http://www.uan.org/index.cfm?navid=617

I have sent out over 60 kits so far. More are going out this week and next! I am so happy to be able to help pets and fire fighters!

I received the Compassionate Kids Award from PETA and was a runner up for the Be Kind To Animals Kids contest from The Humane Association. I was also just notified that I am being awarded the Animals Choice Award from the United Animal Nations!

My local news, radio and newspapers have helped me spread the word. Kat Simons from Lite 98 FM had me on her show. She loves animals and has been so nice to me and helped me. My local bank, Village Bank, has also been a great help. The made donations and have collection cans for me in some of their branches. Our local CBS channel had me on their Virginia This Morning show. And our local ABC channel has done a few stories on me thanks to A.J. Lagoe!

Zootoo.com also did a story on me http://www.zootoo.com/petnews/10yearoldgirlbreatheslifeintop-1226

I have held two yard sales this summer so far. I have raised about $700 at them. The SCA at my school was also kind enough to donate $500.

I have sent out over 50 kits and am working to send 25 more. I am also working to raise more money for several more department that are on my list that have asked for help getting these kits.

Bonner Springs Kansas fire fighters were able to use the mask kit I donated to save this kitty. The kitty is doing fine. I am very sorry that someone's house burned down. I am very grateful to the fire fighters that risked their lives to fight the fire and to save this cat. I'm so glad that I was able to help them.
