The Problem

The Valpo Surf Project is a non-profit organization dedicated the education of youth through the power of surfing. At-risk youth from Valparaiso, Chile are educated in four classes: English, Environmental Studies, Leadership and Character Development, and Surfing. Through this effort we hope to create a social institution for youth in the city of Valparaiso, and encourage growth through education. Currently, we are creating a fifth component to the program, Photo Valpo, which will make arts education available to our students, enabling them to effectively communicate their environment while learning useful photographic skills.

Plan of Action

I plan to create a three-month pilot program which will include students from ages eight to sixteen. These students will learn how to use photographic equipment, learn about contemporary photographers in their country and the impacts they are making, and how to express themselves with their cameras. The students will focus on environmental issues, from their own home environments, to the ocean environment in which they surf every day. At the end of the program, the students will present their work in local, state-side, and online exhibitions.
