The Problem

Our target age ranges from tweens to young adults. Many Los Angeles youth don't really understand the ramifications that they have on our beach environment. This is because some of them, especially in the inner-city don’t realize what they throw in their in the streets end up in the storm drains working its way down to the beach not only affecting beach activities, but also the ocean life. Many birds, seals, and fish become victims to our trash. It is important to teach our fellow youth about ways to reduce storm drain trash and ways to become ocean stewards, while also learning to be active in beach sports.

Plan of Action

We are currently working with Surfrider and volunteering at their events the next event is with Surfrider of Long Beach every second and third saturday of the month. And in Nov. Surfrider Southbay is hosting a clean up at Trumps near the cliffs. (Lets just say there is a lot of trash the last time we hiked the cliffs) We are currently looking to join LRO in their cause and form a partnership. We recently volunteered at the Kodak Theater with LRO (Life Rolls On) for their gala event. It was a good expereince learning about fundraising events and especially about silent auctions. One member in our group recently attended Bioneers in San Rafael learning about advocacy in the environment and environmental groups that can help us achieve our project. Also in the month of October we also attended Craigslist Non-Profit Boot Camp in San Mateo learning about the non-profit sector and organizations that can help. We are now volunteering with Surfrider in efforts to clean up the beaches. We had a beach cleanup Nov 15 on Saturday at Trumps near the cliffs...there was a great turn out and it was interesting to hear from all that came out. Our recent clean up was on Dec 6. at Cabrillo Beach. It was a good success thanks to the support at PV High School who ran an ad in there video production slot (Live from 205). We are also currently attending the Environmental Youth Conference sponsored by the city of Los Angeles hosting a booth talking about environmental issues and beach sports. Our next upcoming clean-ups and events for December: -December 6, 2008 8AM-10AM Cabrillo Beach Clean-up -December 13, 2008 8AM -1PM Environmental Conference “Get your GREEN on!” LA Convention Center That is about it for now ... check our website to stay current on beach clean-ups and events
