Founded by 13 year old Josh Hagar, Playing for Glimmer provides young sports enthusiasts an opportunity to combine their love of the game with the desire to raise awareness and money to supply water wells to children and families in Ethiopia. Based on pledges per games played in summer tournaments, tennis players from the Austin Tennis Academy are committed to raising $30,000 in 2007. Working with A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, all monies go toward building water wells in rural Ethiopia, providing clean water to thousands. Each $3,200 builds one water well which can serve up to 500 people with healthy, clean water close to or within their villages, thereby saving them daily 2-4 hour(or longer) trips to retrieve water from disease-filled streams. Construction of the wells is done through A Glimmer of Hope and in cooperation with local businesses and the people of the village being served. This educates the Ethiopian people on how to build and repair the wells thereby creating sustainability.
In 2007, the ATA team raised $40,000. The goal for 2008 is to raise $150,000 which will build a school, a health post and 11 water wells serving approximately 19 villages.
