The Problem
Through my project I am trying to decrease the effects of climate change and help those who are suffering from homelessness. My project is helping homeless shelters and their residents in the Denver, CO area. I am working with the shelters to reduce their energy usage and save money on their energy bill. The reduction of energy use allows the shelters to spend the money saved on rehabilitation programs, etc. The reduction in energy use also decreases the negative impact the shelters have on the environment.
Plan of Action
For my project I first contacted shelters in the Denver area and told them about my project. Once I choose three shelters to work with I began using local resources to research all about energy conservation and consumption. Once I had complied a fair amount of data I visited the shelters and used a device called a Watts Up? Meter. With this device I measured the energy consumption of appliances around the shelter. Once I measured all the appliances I organized the data into easy to read graphs that included how much money it took to run the appliance monthly, if its energy use was above average and how much energy it actually used. I presented this information to shelters along with ways to scale back on energy use. I am now working to raise money to help the shelters replace appliances that had above average energy levels.
