The Problem
I am helping anyone who is willing to listen. Through poetry, I engage the audience and bring home a strong message: justice for all. Most of my poems address violence against women and I perform these sessions at Universities and Women's Centers. Most recently, I performed to a group of 1,300 young women at the National Girls Scouts Conference.
I'm trying to spread awareness about injustice. Whether it be violence against women, immigration, or Prop 8.
Why It's Important
Everybody listens to music, and everybody enjoys different types of music. The power of poetry is embedded beneath layers upon layers of past experiences. My poetry reduces some people to tears; it makes people laugh; it brings them back to a time when they, too, experienced injustice.
The Plan Of Action
Being a High School Organizer for Advocates for Youth has allowed me to express my sexuality more freely. I am a heterosexual feminist, and I've heard stories of rape and domestic violence. I, too, have been abused. I channel all my anger into school work; but taking 4 AP classes is super difficult. As another leeway, I write my frustrations on paper.
I realized that other people can relate to my work, as well. So, I began taking gigs at NYC cafes and bars. I began my hobby as a "slam poet" and I love the outcome. People, who care about society's injustice just as much as I do, listen attentively to my words. They hear me and they feel the pain that I feel. They feel the power within the poem. It encourages them to fight for justice.

Trevor,
I think that's an amazing thing. Song writing is so incredibly fun, especially if it's for social causes. If you need some gigs, let me know. I can hook it up for ya! You can facebook me: Cristina A. Lara.
