My plan is to construct and implement an aquaponics system in the community, which would provide Ascension with the necessary sustenance in a highly sustainable manner. This method of food production involves the raising of fish, conventional aquaculture, and the cultivation of plants in water, hydroponics, all within a recirculating system. It acts as a symbiotic environment, mimicking natural watersheds around the world; waste from fish is used to directly fertilize the plants and the plants simultaneously filter out the fish waste so that cleansed water then heads back to the fish. Ultimately it allows for healthier, more efficient plant growth (with vegetables growing up to five times as fast) along with the fish that would provide the village with a wholesome diet overall. Through working with David Addison of the Caribbean Sustainability Institute who is very involved and respected in the community I have been offered the opportunity to return in the summer of 2014 to establish such a system. I am fundraising throughout the year through my church, school, work, and other community outlets with a goal of 10,000 dollars to build the system. Additionally, I am currently researching aquaponics and am soon taking an a course on it in order to design the system. Dave has worked on an aquaponics project before in the Dominican Republic so his experience will be instrumental in the success of my project. With readied plans at the beginning of the summer the local workforce will be hired out for the building of larger elements and much of it will be done through the Global Leadership Adventures program where high school students assist in the construction of such projects. A local botanist will run the system, maintaining it and teaching the community of how it works. In order for the aquaponics to be truly successful though I will be creating a food distribution program to ensure that the vegetables and fish are distributed fairly. Much of this is how Dave's previous student-made aquaponics system was done which gives me confidence that this plan will prove effective.
