Project Ignition

the problem:

Project Ignition is a service learning project geared toward safe and smart driving. In the past we have focused on issues such as seat belt usage, speeding, distractions, railroad crossings, pedestrian awareness, and of course drinking and driving. Peer-to-peer interaction is the foundation for the success of this project. Project Ignition is completely owned and run by passionate students with creative solutions for today's problems on the road. Students have the freedom to create posters, commercials, billboards, radio PSA's, or anything else necessary to increase safe driving in their schools and their communities.

My first experiences with Project Ignition were in my junior year of high school. That was the first year our high school was involved with the project, and we ended up winning the national championship in a National Youth Service Learning competition hosted by State Farm. After our championship, we decided to apply for grants and do fund raising to keep the project going as an extra-curricular activity in our high school. Today, the seat belt compliance of my high school is up to 95%, and accidents and speeding have decreased significantly.

Two years later, I entered my freshman year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and quickly realized the campus needed Project Ignition. Our focus here is on pedestrian crosswalks and drinking and driving, two key issues on this campus. This is actually the first ever college based Project Ignition team. We hope to prevent accidents from happening in the future and will continue to grow as a group in the future.

Project Ignition is launching the brand new Designated Driver Program on the Southern Illinois Campus in the next couple of weeks. We have over 20 businesses in the area supporting and participating in our program to reward responsible students who choose to stay sober for their peers. With our Plum Grant money, we have ordered 5000 plastic designated driver cards to be distributed to students during alcohol awareness week October 20th-24th. These cards will get sober students free cover charge, free non alcoholic drinks, and free appetizers and the bars and restaurants who signed on to the program. A copy of the card design is attached.
