The Problem

It's time to start looking at the truth. Project Invoke will create a short movie completely made by youth. We will then publish the DVD locally to give a reality check to people who choose to think of our homeless youth as a "problem". This movie has been completely made by youth who have had a past of homelessness or poverty. The mayor of our city (Eugene OR) has already been interviewed and as such we have a large community support for this project. Homeless folks, drug dealers or "punk teenagers" how many labels could you fit into a sentence or even an article? How much more of a cop out do we need then these previous accusations? We start to forget that these "punk teenagers," are children who need us. They fall under our labels to survive, and they stay there because there is no helping hand. These children only want to be given the choices and opportunities of any other teen. Our picture perfect society doesn't like the ideal of homeless youth, as if they shouldn't exist. People don't want to acknowledge that there are simply not enough resources for the majority of homeless youth to survive. It's easy to look at a middle-aged man who is homeless and pass judgment, but how can you pass judgment on a homeless youth who has no family, no opportunity and in most cases can't legally work? We expect them to go to school, and do their homework, but they aren't worried about getting to math class on time. The homeless youth in our community are more concerned with surviving day to day. This video reflects this truth in a passive way.

How Can Others Get Involved?

Project Updates

10/6/08
Update: Project Invoke has been a great victory in Oregon for homeless and runaway youth. We are now working on part two of the project, which will invite people all across the state to use their voice about what helped them to go from homelessness to safety. The video has now more then a thousand view (from school classes to workshops) and continues to be seen by lots of people!

Final Grant Update

10/6/08
Martin Rafferty
Number of people in the organization: 25
Number of people impacted: More then a thousand people have viewed the video (that we know about)
Describe the impact the grant had: When we got the DoSomething grant we went from the mentality of "This is our project, it will meet our expectations" too "This project is being funded, and we are going to be able to duplicate this video..so we need to do certain things better". The first mentality just came from fatigue, and the grant gave us a boost. If it wasn't for the DoSomething Grant, our project couldn't have created the real change that it did.
Project highlights: Showing the video to youth who were interviewed, and letting them see the change it made. Having the video used to get funds allocated from the state. Seeing a group of my peers and I all come together for one purpose.
How did the project unfold and develop? People really loved the video, they loved watching it, they loved that it was made by homeless youth. We have used it in a variety of different venues including: -High School and College Classes -Workshops including the 2008 State -wide homeless and runaway youth conference -On local TV -Members of local Government The video has been used to help the state allocate money to counties for homeless and runaway youth. It has also helped to shape long term agendas for a state wide mental health group called OFSN. We will be using this video as a tool have the state allocate 4.6 million dollars for homeless and runaway youth.
