20why it's important:
45 percent of Cicero residents are between the ages of 23-27. Out of that 45 percent, 10 percent have obtained a Bachelors degree. The High school drop out rate in Cicero is higher than Illinois State average. 1 to 2 preganacies are reported a week! Over the past ten years an increase of 70 percent of persons in Cicero are living below poverty level.
the plan of action:
Project Rise UP began with fifteen Morton East and West High School Students as our first cohort. At the initiation of this project, none of the students had high expectations in pursuing a College Education. Project Rise UP (PRU) has partnered with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), emphasing the priority of Higher Education. PRU has also partnered with San Jose Obrero Mission (SJOM - a center for homeless men), The men have shared their stories, regrets and dreams behind the pursuit of a much desired College Education. Our high school students not only were eager to prepare for life after High School, they were drawn to choose the center and volunteer for Community Service. They all have aspired to pursue higher education. PRU is currently prepping students for ACT's. We continue to seek funding to bring more High School Students on Board, Increase awareness and encouragement by life's examples.
