Students in the Cesar E. Chavez Service Club at Sunny Brae Middle School in Arcata, California wanted to do something to help out the victims of the recent wildfires in the San Diego area. We wanted to do something that would cheer up children who may have lost their homes or had to evacuate, so our students started Project Smile. They created "thinking of you" cards to send to an elementary school in San Diego. Students decorated the cards and wrote warm and fuzzy messages that will hopefully brighten a child's day during a difficult time. As a part of this project, students discussed issues such as disaster response, the effects of homelessness, and brainstormed ideas for other projects related to these issues.
