The Problem

The United Nations estimates over 850 million people go to bed hungry, over 3 million people die of war every year and about 1 out of every 4 kids are abused by another human being. Now you may wonder what all these things have in common, the answer to this question is simple- the root of these problems is a lack of understanding peace. However peace is deeper, peace is about having a balance or equilibrium in the community. I was inspired to take a deeper insight of peace when I attended the Thousand Lights for Peace Festival in 2008. Standing on the stage as a Winner of Peace Poster contest didn’t matter to me anymore. I saw everybody gathered together their faces illuminated by a flickering flame, it touched my heart and from then on I decided to do something. Although I didn’t start anything until the fall of 2009, every day from then onwards I thought about how much peace was needed in my community. That is when I decided to do further research and learned a great deal about peace. We need better understanding of the 'DNA' of peace as an integral part of cooperative human relationships. Studies has been done on violent individuals to trace the genes that have created their behavior, similarly the emotional relationships of flight or fight are well understood .But by far the most important thing came from The Global Peace Index suggests that there are some important differences between peaceful societies and the ones at conflict. Peaceful societies are large, well integrated and coherent societies. They are more understanding and simplicit and with that create better global community and are accomplish much more. When I read that sentence I knew, I wanted my community to be a Peaceful one. From the research I had gathered though the internet, books and interviews I had conducted, I knew from the start I would have multiple barriers to overcome. Since my project involved me being in contact with students I would have to overcome the following challenges: How would I spark enthusiasm towards my project? What would interest the different student age groups? Who did I need to speak to be able to present my project at schools, museums, and libraries? How was I going to make my project memorable? I want Project T.A.P to have permanent effect so I would have to consider the following: How was I going to measure my effectiveness? How was I going to make sure the Project T.A.P become a permanent part of the places I visited? According to results I had received from my survey on “What Peace Means To Me”, I knew a lot people lacked knowledge on the true meaning of peace. Therefore I knew this would present me with the following challenges: Was I well prepared to answer every provoking question I was asked? How would I handle skepticism and negative remarks? Would I be able to change people minds about peace and make an impact in my community and then hopeful on a international level? In the greater Houston area and internationally many children who are the future leaders of tomorrow, lack the understanding of the importance of peace, an important component in maintaining equilibrium in our society, which is problem we face today.

Plan of Action

By implementing Project T.A.P., I am going to educate the youth in the greater Houston area to understand the importance of the equilibrium brought by Peace. 1) I will design different programs to engage different age groups to be interested in Project T.A.P. For example for elementary schools I would read a children’s book I have written and illustrated on the negative effects of greed, which is an unbalance, and then I would tie it into how being peaceful would help them not end up poorly like the character in the book. For middle school kids my plan was to encourage them by catchy presentations and for high school kids encourage them to be a part of Project and help them to learn about peace. 2) I was going to raise the people’s knowledge on Project T.A.P. and tell them peace will not only make a difference in their lives but it will make a difference in the future decisions that are important to mankind .3) Raise money for Project T.A.P. and raise more public awareness though the website and the YouTube video.4) eventaully create an International Peace center in which coneventions, held by teengaers can lead on Peace. I hope the center then fund many problems that help rising leader in commmunity.
