The Problem
Namakkal district in Tamilnadu in India is amongst the worst hit of HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country both in terms of prevalence and impact. The HIV prevalence rate of 4.4 % (2003) and 2.8% (2004) among the antenatal clinic attendees is among the highest in the state. This is in contrast to the mean of 1% for Tamilnadu. The high prevalence rate among antenatal clinic attendees highlights the extent of vulnerability among women of child-bearing age and general community at large. Namakkal has the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS. In the entire country of India, the Government started the free Anti Retro Viral Therapy (ART) roll out program in Namakkal District Headquarters Hospital for the first time at the district level due to the high number of HIV incidence in Namakkal District.
WORD has been implementing various projects especially in HIV/AIDS in Namakkal District in various of its dimensions like creating awareness, counselling support services, intervention efforts among high risk groups ( truckers, female sex workers, industrial workers, migrants, drug users) and providing community and home based care and support for the HIV/AIDS infected and affected people including children.
During its course of implementation of various projects on STI and HIV/AIDS, WORD felt the need to reach out more number of young people in Namakkal District especially the students in the colleges who have more number of myths and misconcepts on STI and HIV/AIDS. They also don't know the technical and scientific knowledge on STI and HIV/AIDS. As mostly they access to internet, WORD initiated its efforts to reach out with the awareness on STI and HIV/AIDS, provide counselling and guidance and render necessary technical information through this site, http://www.namakkal.weebly.com
