The Problem
Project Zero Waste focuses on environmental ethics at the San Dieguito Academy located in Encinitas, California. Although the program aims to benefit SDA's recycling and composting program, it also works to influence other local schools to start their own program, as well as influence community members to get involved in becoming more environmentally conscious. In addition, after completing a waste audit in 2009 (seen in the provided picture of plastic cups collected from the audit) Project Zero Waste concluded that at least three quarters of our school's waste could be diverted from land fills if properly disposed of. This would mean that SDA would need a recycling and composting program that did not currently exist. Project Zero Waste works to provide outlets to properly dispose of waste so that SDA, and the community of Encinitas, can reduce their carbon footprint.
Plan of Action
After receiving partial funding from a grant in 2009, Project Zero Waste began to work closely with an environmental non-profit to start a comprehensive composting program on the campus of SDA. This included having 8 biostacks and one self-made worm bin. The compost is used in the school garden and in campus beautification projects that began in the 2009-2010 school year. In addition, we plan on making a kiosk with four compartments, one for paper recycling, food waste which is currently collected in small buckets around campus, bottle recycling, and trash.
