The Problem

Hurricane Katrina devasted more than just property. The hopes and dreams of many people were destoyed along with their houses. While the recovery of the Gulf Coast area is taking place slowly, people there need help with more than just bricks and mortar. A prom dress here and there is a welcome sight.

Plan of Action

While I was shopping for my own prom dress, I realized there were so many girls in New Orleans who would not experience the joy of prom because of the devastion left by Hurricane Katrina and the breaking of the levees. I raided my closet and asked everyone I knew to do the same. Before I knew it, dresses were coming from every state in the country! Since then, I have organized many independent groups who are gathering dresses on behalf of "Prom Dresses for New Orleans" and they are sending them directly to the designated schools on the Gulf Coast. We recently hit the 6,000th dress mark! The nation's generosity is incredible and the teens along the Gulf Coast are so grateful. Last year, a school in Galveston, TX, was also included in the program as it began to recover from Hurricane Ike - the young women were so beautiful in their prom dresses! What I hear most from the teens is that the dresses have brought them hope and that means the world to me and to everyone involved.

Project Updates

The young women at Warren Easton High School in New Orleans were the joyous recipients of gorgeous prom dresses this year. Many thanks to The Lamplighter School in Dallas for their generosity and stellar leadership in making this year's prom season a success.
