The Problem

Nyaya Health operates a hospital and mobile medical care services in Achham, a large district in Nepal. Achham is one of the poorest regions in South Asia, and shoulders some of the world’s highest mortality rates, particularly among women. Following a decade-long civil conflict, the health infrastructure of the region has been ravaged. Nyaya provides essential primary care to the region, as requested and directed by community members. We work in partnership with local government officials as part of an initiative to rebuild the public sector health system. We construct healthcare infrastructure, train local health workers, and provide direct medical services.

Plan of Action

First, we determined the needs of the community by obtaining feedback and survey information from the households. Second, we initiated public health programs (community health workers, malnutrition, reproductive and child health services and health promotion) and clinical services (such as 24/7 emergency and delivery services, having an allopathic doctor for a population of a quarter million. We are continuously working to improve the quality, accessibility of our services while raising funds to start an operation theater and purchase solar power system to provide reliable services (where electricity is extremely unreliable and often out for months). We are continuously volunteering our time to raise funds for hospital operation and to be able to provide free health care services to the population, which lives under 40 cents a day.
