The Problem

The young generations of Hmong immigrants are living in a difficult time of transition from their parents. One of the cultural differences is about women’s role. The American culture encourages women’s right, while Hmong culture is patriarchal. Hmong women are expected to serve as good daughters and good housewives instead of focusing on higher education and being socially active outside the families. In addition to cultural differences, there are economics and educational barriers that contribute family conflict and alienation of youth. The girls are Prairie Seeds Academy struggle to find their place and balance in the Hmong and mainstream world where they can be Hmong and American at the same time. I believe I am the right person to help with this problem because I understand that these years are going through. I grew up with the same traditional expectations and obligations. I don't consider myself as solving the problem, but as sharing my knowledge and experience with the students. I want to offer a helping and let the students know that they are not alone.

Plan of Action

When I was coming up with different club ideas, I spoke the the students at the school to get some ideas. I wanted to establish a club that would benefit the needs of the students and gain their interest. During this time, so of the girls have expressed some interest in having a girl talk session. They also had several questions about what steps I took to college and how I dealt with certain situations. The biggest problem I have encountered is the lack of funding to do activities, which then affects the level of participation of the students. Right now we have been getting to know each other, learning about self-identity and writing letters to self. It has not grown since the club has started. I think if we go on a retreat, we can recruit more students and really began from there.
