The Problem

Last summer I spent five weeks in Nakuru, Kenya volunteering at a local boy’s orphanage. It was an incredibly eye-opening experience and helped me realize that many girls in the community also desperately needed a safe place to live. Many girls in the Nakuru area do not have any of the opportunities that boys do. A sad truth is that many are forced to work as prostitutes or laborers to help feed their families or survive themselves. Due to rampant post-election violence, drought and sheer poverty many girls are left with no choice but to simply earn money in any way possible.

Plan of Action

After my volunteering last year I got involved with Rainedge International to raise funds for the girl's home. Construction of the orphanage has been relying on donations provided by volunteers in the community and the friends and family of people involved. Over the past few months Rainedge International and myself have been increasing efforts to reach our projected goal. My role as the U.S. publicity and fundraising advisor has given me the opportunity to reach out to organizations with similar goals and combine our efforts.
