The Problem

This project is to raise awareness on the current political situation in Iran. Since the recent elections in Iran there have been accusations of fraud and false elections resulting in President Ahmadinejad's landslide victory. His opponent, Mousavi, seemed to have more support in the campaigning period, and was sure to win by many Iranian's opinions. So as you can see the results of the election caused huge uproar among Iranian citizens all over the world. As the tensions grew and denial lined the lips of the Iranian government, the citizens chose to take matters into their own hands and began some peaceful rallies and protests. Or so what they thought would be peaceful. The government of Iran tried to ban and outlaw any kind of protest, but this had no effect on the angry citizens. They wanted justice, their voices to be heard, and their votes to be counted. Within days the news began to reveal chaos all over the streets of Tehran (capital of Iran). In an attempt to stop the media from seeing the truth of what was going on in Iran, the government cut off all cell phone connections and access to many internet websites where they could post videos or blog about the situation. None the less Iranian's outsmarted the government and found ways past these restrictions. Through the internet, every night we found new ground breaking video and information leaking through slowly but surely. We could see the matter of a rigged election fade away and turn into a matter of freedom and human rights. The basiji, subordinate to the Iranian Revolutionary Gaurd, received orders to kill or beat anyone who was being defaint. Over 20 people were reported to have been killed, however many claim the numbers to be higher. Hundreds of people were injured or beaten and many were taken to prison and tortured or killed there. One girl, Neda, was shot in the chest by a basiji while walking innocently in the streets of Tehran. Her last moments of life were caught on cell phone video and dispersed throughout the media for the world to see. They say she is "the cry heard around the world" and many continue to fight because of her. Currently, the situation in Iran is still taking way and every day we see more and more innocent lives being taken solely because they are trying to fight for civil rights and against the oppressive Iranian regime. These people are risking their lives every day by walking the streets of Tehran, and yet they continue to struggle and fight because if they don't...who will?

Plan of Action

The past couple of weeks I have started a few rallies in the Tampa area to create awareness to people who don't know much about the situation. I created different posters that say slogans such as "Iran Needs A Democracy" and "Honk for Liberty". Also I have provided green ribbons to anyone who would like to support our cause by wearing it around their wrist or hair as a symbol of liberty and justice. The color green has become a national symbol of freedom, as you can see in many photos of the rallies many people are wearing various green items and clothes. This awareness is the first step, and maybe the only step possible right now toward helping Iranian citizens fight for their rights. Another action that I have taken is to help by being part of a petition to appeal to the UN on Iran's situation.
