The Problem

Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care so that children can grow up with books and a love of reading.

Plan of Action

Volunteers come from all walks of life but have two important traits in common: a love of books and stories, and a genuine interest in helping children. Volunteers would be required to go through a one-day orientation, as well as a physical examination. For the physical, the volunteer would need: a recent PPD (within 6 months), a drug test, and updated immunizations (including an immunization for rubella/ruboela). The physical exam can be completed by the volunteer's physician, or at Morris Heights Health Center (at no cost).
