I used to play chess in Connecticut when I was in school there before moving to Zambia and South Africa. This week a chess association donated some chess sets which my grandmother will bring when she comes to visit later this year.

The Problem
Based on local government statistics, there are 129 schools in Chinsali, Northern Province, Zambia with an estimated student enrollment of 40,000 students. Note, there are only 4 high schools (grades 10-12) that can accomodate 2,000 students, so many teenagers will not even have the opportunity to go to high school. Estimates for the area put the percentage of schools with libraries at 1%, so only 1-2 schools even have a library. This project is to involve the schools, parents and communities into building school libraries to house the donated books and develop reading programs for the children. We hope to collect 100,000 appropriate books for schools.
Plan of Action
My school has collected books and I have donated my own books to the school. My mom is contacting different organizations to receive books as well as trying for funding to pay to ship books from the US and the UK. We are contacting schools in Zambia, South Africa and the USA to donate books and school supplies. We have a suggested reading list compiled from libraries and children that we recommend.
