The Problem
To see is to understand, to understand is to think, to think is to express, and to express is to grow. Our children aren't growing. They aren't being taught to think. What they take in at school has no apparent relationship to their reality. Knowledge, information, and even wisdom can be found everywhere. But, our kids must be taught to see it. They need to be able to see that they can learn, create, and that the learning process can be fun.
Read Write Action! is a program designed to use multimedia to teach students to think by turning their personal stories and experiences into written and visual media. Students will be given the opportunity to write, make short movies, and to produce radio commentaries, about the material they are learning in school and in their lives.
Two critical problems make it urgently necessary for programs like Read Write Action!: first , primarily due to Hurricane Katrina, there are no known youth programs in this community. In the city of New Orleans churches and schools were the main providers of after school and summer programs. Of the 126 public schools in New Orleans only eight were operational in August of 2006. Secondly, as life returns to New Orleans, so does crime. New Orleans is no stranger to crime. However, those who are committing the crime are getting younger and younger. It is my goal to encourage kids to shoot movies and not guns.
