The Problem
Many elderly people of this time feel as if there is a “gap” between their own generation and the technology-consumed youth of today. They believe that the connection between the entire nation that was once felt during World War II, the sense of sacrifice and togetherness, has been lost on a generation who mainly communicates to one another through a computer screen. The elderly citizens at Magnolia’s Assisted Living Home believe that moral and family values have grown lax or nonexistent in a nation where cultural traditions are no longer practiced and passed on. The elderly citizens of this home only wish to have their opinions taken in by youth as they move forward in life and make decisions. They want to know that all of their acquired wisdom and life lessons will not be lost and forgotten in the fast-moving motion of history.
Plan of Action
My class and I are now taking each resident’s account of their life in Conyers, Georgia since the time it was founded to give a more accurate view of the lives of citizens in the area. These personal accounts will bring a new life to our home in Conyers and bridge the spreading generational gap by giving younger citizens a history to be proud of and the elderly the knowledge that their contribution, no matter how small it may seem, will never be forgotten. Many of the people within this book played very large roles in the founding of the city of Conyers and in Rockdale County Georgia as well.
