The Problem

Media for women is a huge industry, but also a horrible influence. Many studies have linked to things such as eating disorders to how women are portrayed in the media. REALITY Check Girl Magazine serves to provide positive media that not only mirrors the same material common women's magazines are known for, but also includes sections on world issues, social problems, religion, culture and more. REALITY Check Girl is meant to empower women and to give them a voice, a place to entertain themselves without feeling inadequate, and also a place to read material they may not have necessarily read before. We have economic policy articles next to fashion exclusives. Media and women can come together and have a positive relationship to empowers them to make a difference...not get an eating disorder.

Plan of Action

Right now we are an online magazine. To get to this stage, I studied media and journalism at Appalachian State University and also bought numerous "For Dummies" books. I even invested some of my own money to launch the web site. I also created an online store with Cafepress.com to sell merchandise where all the proceeds go to Truecampaign.org. So far we haven't earned any money to donate, but I am hopeful. Then the magazine went into a word-spreading phase. We've had newspapers such as the Florida Today write about the magazine, a woman who wrote for the New York Times for 20 years write about the magazine on Trueslant.com and now the Washington Post wants to meet with me within the next couple of months for a profile on their blog. We are currently looking into getting advertisers so we can begin creating a revenue. All our writers, editors and photographers are on a volunteer basis so none are getting paid...which would be nice to do in the future. Once generating revenue, we will begin development of a print version of the magazine so girls can have it mailed to their doors. Eventually I want to create REALITY Check Girl conferences that travels the United States and even the world with empowering information on self image, world issues, and more while presented in a fun environment with guest speakers and concerts. Right now REALITY Check Girl magazine has already reached world wide (We have readership online in Finland, Germany, France, and Australia), but it needs to become a print magazine to make an even bigger impact.
