The Problem
I am a proud member of a school-wide organization dubbed REbeL, which encourages students to "rebel" against a negative body image and low self-esteem. Overall, we are attempting to stifle the stereotype that attractiveness and self-worth are intertwined. We present to middle and high school students and stress the importance of self-acceptance and confidence.
Plan of Action
In order to combat negative body image and a lack of self-confidence, REbeL presents to middle and high school students, highlighting the importance of body confidence. We also conduct a highly popular Fat Talk Free Week, in which we dissuade our peers from stating any derogatory comments towards their bodies. Other short time plans of action include a community wide walk to "Make Every BODY Count" this April to raise money for eating disorder victims who are unable to pay for treatment. My long term goals include majoring in Psychology, earning my P.H.D. and then forming a REbeL group of my own. Later, I hope to write a work about the importance of REbeL in my life, and tour the country helping women and men alike realize their inner beauty. REbeL is not only a high school organization, but a lifestyle. REbeL has made a monumental impact, yet has so much more in store. The pilot program that REbeL serves as at my high school has encouraged schools across the district to look into forming a program of their own. Due to my involvement in REbeL, my life has literally transformed and I hope that others will receive the same joy that I do from this beautiful organization.
