The Problem

Alabama is known throughout the country for being one of the most overweight states in our country and that obesity problem starts early on in a child's life. The newly elected president of Alabama's Board of Education has recognized this problem and has mandated that elementary schools give the students at least 15 minutes of recess. I have been volunteering at a local elementary school that needs help setting up an area for the kids to play and have fun. They have outside sources that will be supporting them with money to buy supplies and I am organizing a group of about 30 to come help build a playground and a recreational area but the funds that are being raised aren't going to be sufficient for what we are planning to do.

Plan of Action

My plan of action is to get a group of 30-40 from my college, The University of Alabama, local high schools, and the kiwanis club to help a local elementary school set up a new playground, track, and new basketball hoops for the students. I have been in contact with the president and counselor at the school and they are very happy with the opportunity that they are presented with. This is a chance to really change the obesity problem on a small scale. The only way to change a major problem like this is by taking it on one step at a time.
