The Problem

We are beginning a school wide recycling program with a focus on paper products. We have begun contacting recycling companies and are in the process of getting a recycling bin on our school grounds. Our goal is to have recycling bins in each classroom, faculty room, and computer lab.

Why It's Important

We are so excited to have the BioTour crew visit our school! We will be posting pictures soon! We have put paper boxes in EVERY room of our high school! We have begun a paper pick up schedule and are conducting a bi-weekly waste assessment to see how much paper waste our school is producing. Our goal by the end of the year is to reduce our waste by 75% and recycle ALL paper waste.

The Plan Of Action

We have set up to have the BioTour visit our school on Thursday, October 2nd. We will have a full school assembly and the BioTour crew will talk to our students about climate change, peak oil, renewable energies, and resource depletion.

Project Updates

10/15/08
Update: We have recently formed committees to gather our school's paper on a weekly basis. We are going to weight the paper weekly as well and see if we are making efforts to reduce our waste. We will then deliver the paper bi-weekly to a local recycling bin in a neighboring community. Our goal is to show the community how much we are recycling and develop a recycling program right at the school! Amount of Paper Collected Week 1&2- 205.2pounds Week 3,4,5-482pounds Week 6,7- 298.8pounds

Update: We recently received awesome new recycling bins from the DEP when they visited our school!

11/10/08
Update: In our first month of recycling paper at our school we have recycled over 500 pounds of paper!! At our recent drop off at the local recycling bin we filled up two large containers!! Now that the students and teachers at our school are aware of the recycling program we are trying to focus on reducing our waste as well. We are encouraging students to double side and to only print when necessary! We hope to have a recycling pick up set up at our school by the end of the year!

Our chorus is passionate about recycling. After our school participated in the International Coastal Cleanup last September, our chorus members have been more aware about what they can recycle. Then when we walked to the Westshore Senior Center to perform, chorus students saw trash along the way that they realized we could recycle--like newspapers and batteries. Afterwards we discussed what we might do about preserving our planet. Choristers voted to recycle newspapers, batteries, used cell phones, empty laser and ink jet cartridges. (We have other classes who recycle plastic bottles and cans.)Our chorus members have promoted the recycling project during morning announcements over closed-circuit TV and through our LaVoy Lancers Newsletter that goes to parents every week. So far we have blue recycle trash cans in the teacher work room, in the music room and in our main office that are designated for specific items. We are in the process of getting bins to recycle newspapers. Several teachers receive daily newspapers for their classroom and they are excited about being able to get rid of the old papers by recycling them. Look for more an update on more plans for our recycling project when school reconvenes in the fall.

Wow! It sounds like your group is on the right track! Keep up the hard work! We did not have ANY recycling at our school and are starting out small with only recycling paper at this point. That is a great idea to advertise the recycling in your school newsletter!
