The Problem

I believe that in order to save our environment, the human race should take all actions possible in order to help. But some things that we know we SHOULD do, just aren't quite as feasible as others. So I would like to solve the easily solvable issues that are contributing to our Earth's demise before trying to attempt the more complex ones. I would like to provide my high school, Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles California with enough recycling bins to make recycling a bottle easier than throwing it away. My school is suffering severe budget cuts, but I refuse to allow this to harm our Earth which has done nothing but provide us as a nation of human beings with a wonderful place to live full of natural resources and promise. I would like to provide at least one recycling bin in each classroom. This will save tons of paper every day. Bottles and cans should also be accepted in these distinct blue bins. I would like to disseminate these recycling bins throughout all hallways as well, and especially in lunch areas, where the majority of a school's trash is created. In a school with almost 3,000 students in it, I believe that this simple installment could save millions of trees every year! And is a million trees, which could take one hundred years to grow back again worth accepting the budget cuts? I don't think so, and that is why I am prepared to take action.

Plan of Action

I plan to use the money obtained from this grant to purchase many recycling bins and ensure the recycling service performs a weekly pick up at Hamilton. I have written a proposal which will be proposed to my school principal in order for the recycling bins to be dispersed and made part of the maintenance plan. I will then make announcements and posters to inform people of the new bins, what they can put in them, and why they should use them. I hope once this first part of my project is installed to expand my project to provide outreach to other public schools who lack recycling bins. I also plan to expand to create a composting bin program at school. I also hope to inspire others to take action, even if only in the smallest way, such as reducing the waste produced by a lunch bag by using an insulated lunch box instead of a plastic bag, or a tupperware container instead of a ziploc bag. This is only the beginning of saving our planet.
