why it's important:

I grew up in Brooklyn, New York where I learned the meaning of adversity at an early age. My mother, a single parent, juggled two jobs to support us. I promised myself not to let all of her hard work go in vain. My determination did not falter although I attended one of the worst high schools in New York City which happened to be in my community. The administration focused on students who were in the honor and special education programs. Students who did not participate in either program, which was the majority, were neglected and not encouraged to excel academically. Instead the staff routinely suggested that the staff pursue a General Education Diploma. Drug and alcohol abuse ran rampant throughout the school.

Despite my surroundings, I found positive activities in and out of school to occupy my free time and continue my academic career. It was not until my 16 year-old cousin was advised to pursue her GED instead of receiving access to academic support that would have allowed her to continue her high school career that it really hit home for me. The environment that was supposed to encourage the development of my academic foundation was merely functioning as a holding cell for the majority of my peers. Many of them were not receiving the assistance necessary for them to succeed.

In 2005, I graduated from Adelphi University with my BA in International Studies and Political Science with the intention of attending law school in the fall. However, my passion to serve my community led me to my plans. Instead, I decided to devote myself full-time to build Redemption, Inc. an organization that gives youth a chance to change their attitudes about their capabilities, reduce the spread of negative behavior and encourage self-confidence.

the plan of action:

Redemption, Inc. is a community based non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage the personal and educational advancement of under served youth between the ages of 13 and 19 residing in urban areas. Through inter-generational learning, community involvement, and self-advocacy we provide academic and professional support.

The name comes from Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”, and its famous line, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind…” Redemption embodies Tiffany’s passion as a civil servant.
