The Problem
The problem I am trying to solve is the amount of deaths from cancer and the suffering people experience once diagnosed with cancer. The Relay For Life at MCC raised $35,000 for the American Cancer Society which helped to fund many of the services which benefit cancer patients and their family in the area. First, a portion of the money goes toward Road to Recovery which provides free transportation to cancer patients going through cancer treatment. The second is the free prosthetics and multiple wigs for cancer patients. The third is “Look Good Feel Better” which is a beauty service that helps patients who have recently have lost their hair and possibly their confidence. The remaining money goes to research facilities funded by the American Cancer Society.
Plan of Action
As founder and chair, I was in charge of marketing the event, creating fundraisers, involving survivors, recruiting teams, creating a program for the event including activities and entertainment, creating ceremonies of hope and remembrance, organizing logistics, mentoring, and leading the committee and teams through a successful Relay season. First, I recruited the committee and teams, then I worked on delegating the workload and taught how to accomplish various assignments. The Relay For Life at MCC’s committee consisted of only high school students, a challenge and benefit. We had meetings monthly until closer to the event at which point they became bimonthly. We worked as a team to accomplish our goal of raising $35,000 in less than nine months.
From September, 2010 to April, 2011, I logged over 1100 community services hours dedicated to the Relay For Life of MCC. I was in charge of a committee, team captains, survivors, and sponsors. This group of people consisted of over 550 individuals not including the community members that came out the day of the event. I will be the event chair for the Relay For Life at MCC again this 2011-2012 season, with a event goal of $40,000 and a personal goal of 1500 service hours.
