RelightNY is focused on tackling global warming and maintaining the health and well-being of the environment around us. Global warming and the deteriorating health of our environment are issues that effect the entire population of our planet, not just a certain group of people. The consequences of the rising amount of greenhouse gases that blanket the Earth and, thus, its rising temperature will have to be faced by everybody. Despite the seriousness and ominous nature that this threat poses to all, it’s, sadly, only recently begun to be genuinely considered, and still too few people take it seriously. RelightNY supplies low-income housing units in New York City with energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) that would replace incandescent bulbs. That accomplishes the dual goal of helping families save money on utility costs and fighting global warming. RelightNY hopes to spur a broad-based movement to place CFL bulbs in all homes—first in New York, then the rest of the country, and, indeed, the rest of the world! For now, we are starting locally, we want to live in a greener-New York City. This program directly benefits New Yorkers by saving them money and directly benefits the global community by reducing carbon emissions.
