Resurrection Lutheran Church Youth Group Mission Project
the problem:
Each year our youth group at Resurrection Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, MN plans a mission trip. This year we decided that instead of traveling thousands of miles we could make a difference close to home. Also with the economy the way it is we thought it was important to plan a trip that would be less costly yet still necessary and rewarding.
In 2010 the group goal is to reach out and assist homeless and needy children in Beltrami County, Minnesota. This community is located 160 miles from RLC.
Beltrami County has some of the highest poverty rates in the state. Out of the total community population, 21% of those under the age of 18 and 12% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
In July 2010 our goal is to travel to Beltrami County (Bemidji) and
1. Conduct a summer camp for needy children. Children under the age of ten are by far the largest group in need of support in the community.
2. Provide building maintenance on low-income properties in the area in need of repair, paint and renovation.
3. Assist with serving meals at the local Soup Kitchen that provides lunch five days a week and dinner three days a week.
4. Gather supplies for Care Kits that would be distributed to homeless people in the area. These kits would include towels, washcloths, soap, shampoo and deodorant.

25why it's important:
Our group realizes the importance of reaching out and helping those in need. We also realize that trips like this help us become better people. The children in this community would also benefit from seeing that other people, especially other kids care about them.
the plan of action:
March: Begin planning trip and make contacts in area
March - July: fundraising, ongoing contact with area, planning of activities and onsite needs such as housing, food for the trip participants.
how you can get involved:
We plan to fundraise within our community through benefit dinners, garage sales, flower sales and other money-making activities.
