The Rhode Island Training School Tutoring Initiative is a program centered at Brown University and started by Brown Students. It is a program meant to forge alliances between college students in Providence and the youthful inmates of the R.I.T.S. Every week we send three shuttles to the school in order to tutor the students in GED prep, math, literature, English, and even come college courses offered through the Community College of Rhode Island. This program is run by two student co-ordinators, and employs nearly thirty volunteers. We work closely with the school in order to provide the inmates with responsible and successful role-models, and give them someone to establish ties with. We work with all levels of students, including the low-functioning, disabled, mentally handicapped, etc..
