The Problem

Youth in DC and Baltimore do not have a voice to express their life experiences and release negative emotions acquired due to violence, poverty, homelessness, and malnutrition in their community. In addition, youth need after-school activities to keep them out of trouble. Lastly, youth illiteracy is a significant problem in DC and Baltimore, particularly for children of color.

Plan of Action

1. Currently, Rise Up, Rebuild hosts the "Nothin' But Love" and "Rise Up" Open Mics in DC. This gives youth the opportunity to share their natural talents in spoken word, poetry, and music. 2. Rise Up, Rebuild has organized and hosted art and creative writing workshops with various organizations in both DC and Baltimore. This gives youth the opportunity to develop their literacy skills; it also develops their creative writing skills by teaching them about poetic forms and devices, adding diversity to their works. We also teach visual art techniques in our art workshops. In addition, the workshops address topics relevant to our students' lives, including education, poverty, gun violence, homelessness, health, and sexuality. 3. We would like to compile students' poetry into a monthly literary publication; students throughout both cities can submit poems of their choice. We would employ youth as editors and artists, as to keep this a youth-based project. Students participating in the workshops will be guaranteed to have their work published in the magazine. 4. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to showcase their work monthly at an open mic, where copies of the Rise Up Literary Magazine will be sold; proceeds will go to the youth and Rise Up Rebuild (to fund future youth-based projects).
