The Problem

Rock Your Awareness is a resource tool used to connect youth and young adults in the community with local nonprofit organizations, spreading awareness and providing education about health and social issues. What started out three years ago as a small karaoke fundraiser to support the San Jose AIDS Walk has now turned into a full-fledged association with volunteers and participants to help unite the community in support of HIV/AIDS awareness and education. We raised money for HIV/AIDS services through social events, such as Rock for AIDS, where local big-named bands provide entertainment, while our community nonprofit partners set up tables and booths to provide information about their services and spread awareness and education about HIV/AIDS and sexual health. We have also started a youth council, Rock On Campus Kickoff (ROCK) to encourage high school students to use our resource tools in creating their own youth events and provide information in their high schools regarding the social issues they want to support. Our first ROCK event, Bringing Sexy Back, was a huge success in spreading the word to youth about STD and HIV/AIDS prevention resources. We have also branched out and become involved with other social and health issues, such as prevention of women’s heart disease and raising money for the victims of Darfur.
