The Problem
The crime wave that continues to drown Far Rockaway in fear and frustration is the end result of the perfect storm of neglect. Resource starvation, governmental apathy and planned gentrification have further destabilized the tenuous existence of thousands of families on the peninsula. The fact, supported by statistics, is that violence has been out of control in Far Rockaway for several years. The rest of the city just didn't hear or care about it. This year alone there have been over 8 murders in Far Rockaway!
Plan of Action
Our mission is to empower youth in our local communities through civic engagement & volunteer opportunities. We seek to spark social change in the Rockaways through youth leadership and by providing opportunities for teenagers and young adults to become productive citizens of the Rockaways.
RYTF is divided into three main components: Personal Advancement, Civic/Political Engagement, and Volunteer Opportunities.
Personal Advancement: Goal:
To bring out the best in each of our members, and in the youth of the community. We will teach vital life skills such as Resume Writing, Goal Setting & Business Etiquette
Civic/Political Engagement: Goal:
To produce informed, socially engaged individuals who know the ins and outs of their community. Members will attend a variety of community meetings including Precinct Community Councils & Community Board 14.
Create a strong political base for young people to have a platform to speak on issues that they feel need to be addressed, and encouraging them to exercise their right to vote.
Volunteer Opportunities: Goal:
To prove that we not only “talk the talk” but “walk the walk”, as well. Our members will be required to complete a minimum of 6 hours of community service and/or community outreach a month.
We believe when youth see other youth involved that is where true social change is formed!
