Safer Schools

the problem:

I have been chosen nationally to be a Jump-Start Coordinator by GLSEN, they Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Education Network. I work with the north-east region on starting GSA’s (Gay-Straight Alliance) in their high schools. I currently launched a campaign called “8 for 2008”. My goal was to have eight GSA’s started and registered in New Jersey before 2008. I have reached my goal and I have about 14 high schools already signed up. Even more recently I’m working on a Drop-In center for GLBT youth in northern New Jersey. Our planned first meeting is for November 17th.
My e-mail address can be found on www.studentorganizing.org which is a national website for students that wish to do social work in their local communities. I am available 24/7 for students that have questions on how to make a safer school in their community.
I have done workshops around the national voluntarily. Recently I worked closely with Equality Forum which is a global GLBT organization that created GLBT History Month. I created an easy outline for students to follow so that they could initiate GLBT History Month in their schools.
On a more local level, I am the president of the GSA in my high school. I am a senior at Columbia High School, in Maplewood, NJ. I put together several events throughout the year for the community. National Coming Out Day, GLBT History Month, Ally Week, Martin Luther Organizing Weekend, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Day of Silence, are just a few of the events I put together in my community.
