The Problem

Salkehatchie Summer Service is for high school and college age youth drawn primarily from the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. Participants must be at least 14 years old by the beginning of the camp they attend. Adult leaders are also needed to offer guidance and support. There will be more than 2900 participants involved in Summer, 2007. Salkehatchie started with one camp and has spread to 44 camps which help rebuild poor communities in South Carolina and parts of North Carolina. At each camp, volunteers are sectioned off to each of the 7 to 9 houses that are in need, and the students re-finish, rebuild, and re-establish their foundation as a home and their foundation as a christian. Each house makes an imprint on our lives. Over the week, we create a new relationship with a new family that we help, a new relationship with our volunteer family, and a rekindled relationship with our old friends from Salkehatchie summers past. Salkehatchie changed my life at 14. It brought me closer to God and closer to friends and family. I attend the Baker Creek Salkehatchie in McCormick South Carolina. Salkehatchie uses the volunteer's registration money for funding for wood, paint, tools, shingles, and other needed supplies. With the help of 'Do Something', Salkehatchie could help more families in South Carolina and hopefully the world. I can say for all of the volunteers at Salkehatchie, that because we've gone, we all want to save the world, and because we've gone, we want to show the world what one community can do with the help and support of volunteers and God.
