The Problem

Cultural shock is one of the most pressing issues refugees encounter when arriving in America. For example when refugees from various countries come to America they come from different cultural backgrounds and language barriers. Refugees are not accustomed to the ways of the American culture. The International Refugee Garden helps to integrate refugee culture on American soil. It brings back a sense of home. In addition the garden helps relieve financial pressure on the family because it brings fresh foods refugees are accustomed to, to their table at home without the stress of spending money at American grocery stores. Overall the garden helps refugees and Americans be more aware of different cultures within the community.

Plan of Action

The MERC Group’s plan of action would be to use the DoSomething Grant money to purchase all the needed supplies that would make an abundant and bountiful International Refugee Garden. Those supplies would be anything from wood to build plots to the seeds to plant the vegetables/fruits. By meeting the needs of the refugees within the community the young refugees of the MERC Group will have discovered what it truly means to be humble by means of giving more than they receive.
