The Problem
There are two problems that we are trying to solve. The first is that our community doesn't entirely support youth involvement in community programs, boards etc. Our community felt that us youth should only be seen and not heard. The second is that we had a problem where a business within close proximity to the high school that was awarded a liquor license, and we want to make sure that we keep the youth safe from exposure to alcohol at school.
Plan of Action
This year, I helped to create a civics education and outreach group: The San Juan County Youth Council. The goal of the Youth Council is to promote youth voice in our community, and to provide a youth voice on the San Juan County Council. We are now incorporated into the county system, and we want to make our voice heard in our community. To make our voice heard, we have written a bill that deals with our second issue. The bill would change the distance that a business with a liquor license can be from a school. We presented the bill to our legislators, and we found a senator to sponsor the bill. Now we are in the process of getting the bill passed in to law.
