Our youth program called Teen REACH meets at Muphysboro Youth and Recreation Center in Murphysboro, IL every day after school. We are a small group of middle school students who have decided to participate in National and Global Youth Service Day on April 19th to celebrate youth making a difference in their community throughout the country and the world. We made a community map of the Murphsboro, IL community and decided that helping animals at a local shelter was a project we wanted to work on. We have divided ourselves into three groups: communications to produce flyers and letters to send to community members, bake sale planning to collect recipes, make shopping lists and bake items, and project ambassadors to spread the word about our project. We are planning a bake sale at a local Pet Co. store on April 11 to raise money to give to a local 'No Kill' shelter we will visit on April 19th on Youth Service Day. At our bake sale we will also hand out flyers to increase awareness about animal abuse and neglect and the need for shelters. We are also asking local businesses to help us raise money by posting flyers in their stores and letting us leave a collection can for patrons to leave donated money. We plan to buy some supplies on the shelters 'wishlist' with the money that we earn and present the items and any additional funds we earn to the shelter when we visit and in the months following.
