Because I knew that I could do something to help Sophie, I created my own team for the annual Great Strides walk. I had always walked as a member of her smaller team, Sophia’s Stars, but decided to take on a bigger leadership role and created a new team, Saving Sophie. It started out in 2007, my freshman year, as a very small group, and we decorated t-shirts and cans and raised money throughout the school. I found a lot of support at Bowie, and ended up raising over $2,000- more than I had every expected. Since then, I have raised over $10,000 for Sophie and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Saving Sophie is a really big deal at my high school now; if you walk through the halls on any given day, you’re bound to see at least ten people wearing a Saving Sophie shirt. We raise money through Jar Wars in a classroom competition throughout the entire English department, organize events, sell t-shirts, talk to classes, and spread awareness of the disease. This year, we planned two big events- Love at First Bid, (a date auction), and Sophie’s Soiree, (a professionally catered banquet). We also had smaller events, like Saving Sophie Live, where musical artists Sara Joyner, Haley Harris and Jon Scott played guitar and sang at a local coffee shop to raise money. There are eight Saving Sophie officers, and we work very hard year round to make a difference.
